Influential Communication

“there are three things that create all business problems; communication, communication and communication” (Dr Stephen Covey, internationally respected leadership authority, family expert, teacher, organisational consultant, and author)

Communication challenges every living creature. Whether you're a frog croaking for a mate in a pond or a partner pitching for a new client, you need to communicate effectively, especially if you want to influence others.

Many factors influence our ability to communicate effectively. Our level of interest varies depending on the sender of the message, the message topic, the channel used and the circumstances at the time of communication. In work environments, we abide by an imposed hierarchical structure. In such a situation, if we're keen for promotion, we may put much effort into listening with rapture when anyone senior to us speaks. A prospective client explaining their requirements will also tend to get all of our attention.

In this presentation we will investigate Communication Styles and how an awareness of your communication style can help you improve your communication. Find it easier to listen with interest and to communicate effectively using simple techniques that make it easier for others to understand your message. You will be able to use this information to:

• Build rapport with others

• Be more efficient

• Give better instructions

• Engage and persuade clients and colleagues

• Present information to groups

The concept of 3 styles, Visual, Auditory and Kinaesthetic was first developed by psychologists and teaching specialists such as Fernald, Keller, Orton, Gillingham, Stillman and Montessori, beginning in the 1920's. As part of this session, you'll undertake a quick quiz to determine whether your style is predominantly visual, auditory or kinaesthetic.
